Flow in the Ordinary: Reclaiming the Spaces In-Between

Most of life happens in the spaces between things.


Between one meeting and the next.

Between finishing a task and starting another.

Between one breath and the next.


We don’t usually notice these moments. Unfortunately we fill them instead. We reflexively reach for our phone. We open another tab. We rush ahead mentally to whatever comes next.


The result is a day that feels continuous, but never settled.


Recently, I heard someone describe a practice that simply involves noticing the small gap between breaths. Not controlling our breath. Not forcing relaxation (however that works). Just noticing the brief pause that already exists there.


Because the same thing exists everywhere in daily life, the idea has stayed with me.


The moment after sending an email.

The few seconds before answering a question.

The pause while waiting for the elevator doors to close.


These spaces are not empty. They’re opportunities for focus and reset attention.


Flow isn’t only about deep concentration during our biggest most significant tasks. It’s also about how we move between moments. When every transition is filled with stimulation, our mind never fully settles. But when we allow even a few seconds of pause, things change.


Our nervous system softens. Thoughts slow down and feel less urgent. Attention returns to the present instead of racing out somewhere ahead of us.


We don’t need a formal practice for this. Weu don’t need extra time.


Just notice the in-between.


The small pause before you speak.

The breath you didn’t realize you were holding.

The moment after one thing ends and before the next begins.


Attention.


These tiny spaces are easy to ignore because they don’t look productive. But they are where rhythm comes from. They are where the day begins to feel less like a chaotic sprint and more like a series of connected moments performed on purpose.


Today, try reclaiming one in-between space. Don’t fill it. Don’t fix it. Just notice it.


Flow often begins here in the quiet gap we habitually rush to get past.
